What is tagua?

Tagua is a nut derived from palm trees indigenous to the rainforests of Ecuador, also called the Ecuadorean ivory palm.

Each tree generates numerous bushels of seed pods per year, each holding up to 100 Tagua nuts, providing a sustainable source.

Once the nuts are harvested, dried, sliced, and dyed, they offer the foundation for crafting exquisite forms for jewellery, figurines, and practical items like buttons.

Furthermore, supporting this alternative source is essential for conserving various mammals like elephants, whales, and walruses that have been targeted for their ivory.

Our products are primarily crafted from the tagua nut which is a fully sustainable source.

The production of our beautiful jewellery can only be made possible by the skill of the artisans in Ecuador who craft them.

This in turn empowers the communities by providing reliable employment and a decent living wage which will enable them to eat well, maintain schooling for their children, and invest in their futures.

Rooted in this, traditions are maintained, local economy thrives, and the beautiful rainforest environment remains safeguarded and robust.

How our jewellery is made

Follow the process below...

  • ◦ Nature's gift

  • ◦ Harvest and drying

  • ◦ Peeling process

  • ◦ Shaping

  • ◦ Refining, pre-dying

  • ◦ Dyed and crafted

Starting from palm trees indigenous to the rainforests of Ecuador, also called the Ecuadorean ivory palm, every tree generates numerous bushels of seed pods per year, each holding up to 100 Tagua nuts.

The tagua seeds are extracted with great care from the bushel and left to dry for several months under the scorching Ecuadorian sun.

After complete drying and hardening, skilled artisans expertly peel tagua seeds either by hand or with various chisels and tools, establishing a foundation for additional shaping.

The skilled artisans can then meticulously start working with a chisel and tools, creating intricate and exquisite shapes and forms, with endless possibilities.

The item is carefully refined with filings from the same material, resulting in a flawless finish. Further polishing is completed through a tumbling process.

The polished seeds are dyed using only natural vegetable and mineral dyes, creating a spectrum of colour options for crafting jewellery and other items.
